Chapter Eight

Chalyce looked down at the pair and shook her head in disgust. “You’re both just babies. Why the hell have you decided to live as rogues? I don’t sense you’ve been vampires all that long.”

“We haven’t been,” the girl softly told her. “We were at a party and got high. Someone there changed us. We can’t go home now, and we don’t know how to get blood any other way.”

“God in heaven!” Skord angrily muttered.

Chalyce grabbed the girl’s jacket and hauled her to her feet. “What’s your name?”

“Leisel.”

“Listen to me, Leisel, and listen well…you take your beau into the woods, away from the city. Find some sun-safe place to sleep. He’ll be healed by tomorrow night. But no matter how hungry you get, don’t hurt anyone for a meal.”

“H-how do we survive?” Leisel plaintively asked as she wept.

“Find a hospital or a blood bank and break into it. Steal the blood you need, but only blood that’s gone out of temperature range or is about to expire; anything that’s unfit for human consumption. Blood banks keep a lot of that stuff around. They sell it for research. That’ll be your food from now on,” Chalyce instructed. “But if I catch you back in Arad, or ever see you again anywhere…I’ll kill you both!”

The girl looked down at her companion. “I-I think we could do it, Peter. We don’t have to hurt anyone.”

The boy finally stood even though his wound still bled. “Can we be cured? Is there a chance?”

Chalyce let the girl go, stepped back and looked them over. “Not from vampirism, no. But you don’t have to be a rogue, which is what the rest of the vampire world calls those who feed off their own kind. You can change into a regular vampire but only if you stop eating our flesh and do it soon!”

She shook her head in exasperation. “Your life expectancy won’t be very damned long if you keep this up. If I don’t kill you, another vampire will. Rogues threaten us all. Your tactics tonight were absolutely pathetic. A child could have taken you out,” she exaggerated.

The girl grabbed the boy’s hand. “Come, Peter. Let’s get out of here.” She looked back at Chalyce as she led the boy away. “We’ll change our ways, I swear we will.”

Skord saw the girl and boy visibly pale as they caught sight of him. They’d been so intent on catching Chalyce for a meal they tuned every other thing out including the presence of Chalyce’s mate. He waited until the youngsters got to the end of the alley and fled into the night before approaching her.

She grinned and shrugged. “You think I’m foolish for letting them go, don’t you?”

He bestowed what he hoped was his warmest smile. “I don’t think compassion is ever foolish.”

“They probably won’t listen. Like any other kid addicted to something, they’ll keep going until they get killed.”

“That’s their choice. They can certainly convert away from being rogues, being as young and new to vampirism as they are.
